Follow us into Mesón del Champiñón, an enchanting tavern in the Old Quarter. Located beside the grand Plaza Mayor, this cobbled medieval stretch of lanes and by-lanes houses some of Spain’s oldest taverns and restaurants. The tradition is to go tapas hopping here, washing them down with wine and beer. By the end of the trail you are sure to be loosening up your belt.
The website of the tavern proudly announces:
“El Mesón del Champiñón opened in 1964 with the illusion of making people spend a great time, eating well. It is a magical place to eat the best and most delicious mushrooms in the world!
We’re just like the ones who opened this place. We have the same goal: to share with everybody going inside, the happiness and sympathy that characterize Spanish people, that make us well known throughout the world… We go on with the same enthusiasm or even more: to have fun, wherever you come from.
Eating well, singing, enjoying our wine and culture in such a piece of Madrid history. These are our hallmarks. You will not be sorrowful after knowing us.”
Everything at this tavern is inspired by mushrooms, down to the wall art. The place itself appears to be like a cave. The de-stemmed mushrooms were presented as caves, too, into which went extra virgin olive oil, garlic, herbs and a little pepper. That’s it. The simplicity was what blew us away.
Grilled or filled: every mushroom tapas here is an absolute treat.
This gentleman’s music was just the perfect touch to the evening!
