Editor’s Review: Lands of Loyal Hotel, Scotland

A classic retreat in Perthshire

We stayed at this magnificent four-star Country House Hotel, and would highly recommend it for those who love elegance and grandeur in a tranquil setting. The red sandstone building looms into view, and because it is located on a slope, it has an immense, towering impact.

But even the imposing exterior yields no clue of the luxurious environs within. This is what the Grand Hall looks like:

The famous hallway was inspired by the famous cruise liner the Mauretania from the glory days of the Edwardian era.  The opulence is still here today.  There is a vast roaring fire under a magnificent marble surround. You are welcome to sit beside it and have a peaceful experience.. The chandelier and light fittings are actually from the liner. What a stunning entrance indeed!

Climb upstairs to your room, and you are likely to stop short: the sheer grace and comfort before your eyes are healing to the soul:

In the main house, there are fourteen guest bedrooms, each of which is individually and tastefully designed, each has an en suite bath or shower, satellite television, tea and coffee-making facilities and a private telephone. Some have a 4 poster bed, and most offer a South facing view over the vale of Strathmore.

Then you step out into the extensive four-acre grounds overlooking the valley, and to me, that view is the showstopper!

How can I not talk about the food? The Lands of Loyal Hotel is an effusion of Scottish style, and sources the freshest ingredients–some from its backyard–for the delicacies served here. We innocently asked for “cream tea,” supposing it to be a creamy variety of tea until we were told with a polite smile that it is more than a cup of tea–it is an afternoon ritual, presented thus:

Once in a lifetime, drive across the beauteous vales of Scotland, and if you cross Perthshire, stop over at the Lands of Loyal.
