It is one of the most popular festivals of the Isan region, alongside other events, such as the Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival.
What: The Phi Ta Khon Festival, also known as the Ghost Festival.
Where: Dan Sai district in Loei province in Thailand’s Northeastern Region
When: Between June and July, every year
Why : To enjoy three days of merrymaking with the locals, who dance and strike poses while wearing huge masks made from carved coconut-tree trunks. The masks, topped with wicker sticky-rice steamers, make them appear taller and more grotesque.
What Else: Besides the unique masked parade through the town, there are several traditional rituals and Buddhist ceremonies at Wat Phon Chai temple. These include a recitation of the thirteen sermons of Phra Vessandorn – about a previous life of the Lord Buddha. Plus, there’s a Phi Ta Khon mask dance competition, special markets selling food and local handicrafts, live music performance and cultural shows.
