Madrid: How to Make the Most of its Magical Nightlife

Super secrets on the city’s best pubs and clubs

By Oksana Stanovkina

When I was going through my Madrid photos, I noticed that all of them have that sharp,
brilliant, high-contrast, intensely sun-flashed quality that is just so unique to Madrid’s character (and, well, climate).

It was super hot and dry when I was there – no different to its average summers. Though (and it was May, not even the hottest month!). But it still surprised me how this dry heat caused by Madrid’s location very high above sea level gives it such a unique feel that, although quite appealing, is definitely not for everyone’s taste.

Yet, when this intense heat fades away with sunset, nothing can compare to the flair of
Madrid’s vibrant, velvety nights with the characteristic Gran Via sparkle and the usual after-dark hustle and bustle, madrileños-style! It’s an absolute must-watch the sunset over Gran Via with a cool glass of some sparkly drink on one of the city’s many glamorous rooftops – and spend the night hopping from one to another! After all, Madrid is the city that never sleeps, and for that very reason, madrileños are often called ‘Gatos’ – night cats. And no wonder, in the city of sun their nocturnal lifestyle is probably their only escape from the scorching heat of the day!

Madrid’s Street Life

One of the best spots to escape Madrid’s street havoc at night and enjoy some spectacular
vistas are the food court with a terrace on the top floor of El Corte Ingles. The one near the Callao Theatre on Gran Via. The entrance is free, plus there’s a variety of cafés and bars where you can buy some gourmet tapas and drinks to fully enjoy the amazing views of Callao and the famous Schweppes building. It’s a perfect option if you’re on a budget. Albeit quite a popular one – so prepare for some company, especially around sunset time. But anyway, it’s an unforgettable experience and a nice place to chill with some cocktails high above the street noise.

My personal favourite though is the sky bar/nightclub ‘De Madrid al Cielo’ (‘From Madrid to
the sky’) – simply because of its spectacular glass walkthrough high above the city where you can, quite literally, walk on air! And, of course, gawk at the truly breathtaking views of Madrid’s most emblematic sights while floating in the clouds, Madrid and the nightlife (plus, take some awesome pictures for your social media!). It’s certainly not for anyone with a fear of heights, as it’s located on the 27th floor of the newly renovated Hotel Riu Plaza España. But be warned: it’s free for hotel guests, but there is a fee for outside visitors: €5 from 11.00 to 17.00 and €10 from 17.00 to 01.00 (and the lines to get in could be quite long!).

My Experience of Madrid & its Nightlife

Want to dive into the frenzy of the streets instead of escaping it? Head to the La Latina
neighbourhood as soon as it gets dark! Cava Baja Street offers the best tapas and vermouth in the city. It houses many traditional bars, along with rowdy crowds and a traditional Spanish after-hours ambience. After all, it’s often called the ‘heart and soul’ of Madrid and the nightlife for a reason. Just make sure you don’t waste your time by going there during the day. Especially, during the siesta hours because everything will be closed! And to complete your very local night out as a true madrileño, for a late breakfast (or should I say brunch already) I suggest you head to Plaza Mayor. Chocolateria San Gines for the most authentic (and delicious) churros con chocolate in the world. The Jamon museum if you’re not that into sweets but very into meats.

Something tells me you won’t be disappointed either way! Happy Madrid-style bar hopping.
