Seven Sisters Cliffs, East Sussex, England

A delightful day trip from London

By Shubhra Krishan

These are the UK’s highest chalk sea cliffs, in Beachy Head. This British beauty spot is a pleasant two-hour drive from London. Seven distinct hilltops, known as “The Seven Sisters,” comprise the silhouette of the cliffs and the stones get their bright white colour from the abundance of chalk on their surface.

This is one of Eastbourne’s most famous TV and film locations. The scene from the James Bond movie, The Living Daylights, where a secret agent parachutes from a Land Rover, is set here.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang also chose the famous cliffs for its car chase. The scene where the car drove off the cliff tops but then opened its wings to fly!

Some of the quidditch scenes from Harry Potter – The Goblet of Fire were filmed here.

Cate Blanchett stood on the edge in Notes on a Scandal.

What makes Seven Sisters Cliffs special? These magnificent chalk cliffs, formed in warm, shallow seas, are between 60 and 130 million years ago. This was back when the dinosaurs dying out gave way to the evolution of birds on Earth. Today, these chalk grasslands are home to a rich and diverse range of flora and fauna.

And if you’re looking for a place to stay in the UK, look no further than The Lodge at Winchcombe!
